#RechargeAcademy Driving Participation in Cultural Innovation

03 Jun - 06 Jun @ EUR - Erasmus University Rotterdam

Introduction

From 3 to 6 June 2025, the Erasmus University campus in Rotterdam hosted the RECHARGE Academy, an intensive four-day programme bringing together 20 professionals from the cultural heritage and creative sectors to explore participatory business models that strengthen the sustainability and societal impact of cultural organisations.

Details

With a unique blend of theory and practice, the Academy empowered participants to rethink and co-design innovative strategies using the Living Labs methodology. Each day focused on a key dimension of participatory innovation:

  • Day 1 laid the foundations with inspiring keynotes, including Simon Tanner from King’s College London, and reflections on RECHARGE’s values by Carlotta Scioldo. Participants immediately dove into interactive group work, exchanging ideas and expectations.

  • Day 2 focused on co-creation, with case studies from RECHARGE Living Labs at The Hunt Museum, Museo del Tessuto, and the Estonian Maritime Museum. Participants reimagined cultural business models and explored how collaboration drives innovation.

  • Day 3 turned to impact measurement, featuring hands-on tools and frameworks led by Fundacja Centrum Cyfrowe and The Hunt Museum, followed by a thought-provoking session by Luis César Herrero Prieto (Universidad de Valladolid) on the real value of participation.

  • Day 4 closed the circle with evaluation and iteration, starting with Fatima Espinosa Casero on meaningful indicators, and Camilla Marini on learning cycles. The highlight of the day was a dynamic pitching session, where participants presented their project ideas and received feedback from RECHARGE mentors.

The RECHARGE Academy wasn’t just a training — it was a space for collective transformation, driven by shared purpose and diverse expertise. From bold ideas to practical tools, from networking to project co-design, the Academy left participants ready to embed participatory practices in their own organisations.

We thank all the speakers, mentors, and participants who contributed to this energising and impactful experience. The journey continues — and the RECHARGE spirit lives on.
