Project Name: People's Theatre
Based in: Budapest, Hungary
People’s Theatre has historically been a significant cultural hub in Budapest, serving as a gathering place for newcomers, merchants, artisans, and artists since the 1850s. Today, although the theatre itself is gone, the street remains vibrant with a diverse population primarily from Hungary, Africa, and Asia. This diversity, rich with skills and knowledge, has the potential to greatly contribute to the street’s economic and social development. Unfortunately, it currently acts more as a barrier to change due to a lack of platforms for intercultural interactions and lasting alliances.
The district's cultural initiatives, if collaborative, could enhance each other's sustainability by sharing resources and supporting one another.
KÖME’s People’s Theatre project aims to revive the neighbourhood’s sense of heritage and promote its value among stakeholders. By addressing shared challenges such as social segmentation, decaying infrastructure, and financial scarcity, we can create a strong network of diverse stakeholders.
The imaginative restitution of the People’s Theatre will serve as a catalyst, fostering collaboration and revitalizing the community. This initiative emphasizes the neighborhood’s rich heritage and leverages it to build a more interconnected and resilient community.
